The earliest mentions Of The Emergence Of Maa Kaali can be traced back to the medieval period, approximately around 600 C.E. During this time, Maa Kaali Was Often Associated With warfare and battles.ย
According to one allegory in The Holy Text Of The Devi Mahatmya, Maa Kaali Emerged On the battlefields of the battle against the demons sumbha and nishumbha.ย ย
Long ago, two arrogant asuras, shumbha and nishumbha, usurped lord indra’s dominion over the three worlds, causing the gods to lose their power. The Divine Mother Had Made A Promise That She Would Come To Their Aid Whenever She Was invoked during times of distress. So, the gods praised and invoked Her.
The Divine Mother Manifested Herself In A Magnificent Form From And Made the himalayas Her Place Of Dwelling. Her Unparalleled Beauty Attracted the attention of chanda and munda, the two servants of shumbha and nishumbha. They concluded that since their masters had already stolen everything valuable from the gods, they should possess โThis Most Beautiful Deviโ as well.
shumbha sent his messenger, sugriva, to charm The Divine Mother and convince Her To Come to him and nishumbha. However, sugriva returned with a challenge becauseThe Divine Mother Told them That She Had Vowed Long Ago that anyone who wished to marry Her must first defeat Her in battle.
shumbha assigned dhumralochana, a chief warrior, to forcefully bring The Divine Mother back. After his unsuccessful attempt, chanda and munda were sent to retrieve Her. As The Divine Mother Observed them and their vast army approaching, She Scowled, And From Her Furrowed Brow, The Terrifying Maa Kaali Emerged And Annihilated the demon forces.
After Slaying the demons chanda and munda, Maa Kaali Came To Be Venerated As “Maa Chamunda”. Later in the battle, Maa Kaali Also Destroyed the demon raktabija.ย
It is important to understand that Maa Kaali Is Not Merely A Secondary Emanation Of The Divine Mother, She Is The Supreme Divine Mother Herself In Another Form, With Multiple Aspects Of Her Own.
